Alabaster does not block light, it slows it. Switch it on and the stone glows from within, warm and uneven, the way a candle is warm. A lamp cut from rock, older than anyone who will own it.

The undyed linen bed

Long-fibre flax, washed until it forgets it was ever stiff. It creases, and that is the point. It grows softer every year you sleep in it, which is the opposite of almost everything you own.

The chalk-glazed carafe

Stoneware under a chalk-white glaze, thrown by hand so no two match. It holds water, or flowers, or nothing at all. On a bare table it does the quiet work a vase of colour tries too hard to do.
